Imagine two students preparing for the same exam three weeks away. The first studies the topic for four hours in one sitting the night before. The second studies the same material for four hours too — but split into eight half-hour sessions spread across the three weeks. They put in identical time. On exam day, the second student remembers dramatically more.
That difference is the spacing effect, one of the most reliable results in memory research — a 2006 review by Nicholas Cepeda and colleagues pooled more than 250 experiments and found that spreading study out beats cramming it together again and again. Spaced repetition is how you put that effect to work on purpose: the same effort, spread out instead of piled up, produces stronger, longer-lasting memory. Here is how it works and how to actually use it.
The problem: you are built to forget
Forgetting is not a flaw in your memory; it is a feature. Your brain is constantly deciding what is worth keeping, and its default assumption is that anything you encounter once and never need again can be discarded. Left alone, a new fact you learn today tends to fade over the following days — the “forgetting curve” first mapped by Hermann Ebbinghaus in the 1880s. His original tests used nonsense syllables, so material you genuinely understand fades more slowly than his curve suggests; but the basic pattern holds, and much of what you study can slip away within days unless something interrupts that decay.
Cramming loses to this curve every time. You can force a lot of information into your head in one long session, but without reinforcement it drains away almost as fast as it went in. The all-nighter feels heroic, but most of what you force in overnight drains away within days — which is worthless if the exam is next week.
What spaced repetition does about it
Spaced repetition means reviewing information at increasing intervals — a day later, then a few days later, then a week, then a couple of weeks — instead of all at once. Each review comes just as the memory is starting to fade, and each successful review flattens the forgetting curve so the memory decays more slowly the next time. Review often enough, at the right moments, and a fact moves from “gone in a week” to “known for months.”
The magic is in the timing. Reviewing too soon is wasteful — the information is still fresh, so recalling it is easy and teaches your brain little. Reviewing right at the edge of forgetting is where the gain is largest, because the retrieval is effortful and effort is what strengthens memory. This is also why spaced repetition and active recall are really two halves of one method: spacing decides when you review, and active recall decides how — by retrieving, not rereading.
How to do it without any app
You do not need software to space your reviews. Two low-tech systems work well:
The Leitner box. This is the classic paper method for flashcards. Set up three to five boxes (or labelled dividers). All new cards start in Box 1, which you review daily. When you get a card right, it moves up to the next box, which you review less often — Box 2 every three days, Box 3 weekly, and so on. When you get a card wrong, it drops back to Box 1. The effect is automatic: cards you know well drift toward infrequent review, while cards you keep missing stay in your face daily. It is spaced repetition run entirely on cardboard.
The expanding-interval schedule. If you prefer notes to flashcards, keep a simple review log. When you first learn a topic, note the date and schedule closed-book recall sessions — not rereads — at widening gaps, ticking each off as you go. It is crude, but it captures the core of the technique with nothing but a calendar:

How to do it with an app
The reason spaced-repetition software exists is that scheduling reviews by hand gets unmanageable once you have hundreds of items across several subjects. A good app tracks every card’s history and shows you exactly what is due each day, adjusting each interval based on how well you knew it. Anki is the best-known free option — a favourite in medical school and among serious self-testers; it is powerful but genuinely confusing at first, so it is worth learning how to use Anki properly rather than fighting it. If you would rather stay on paper, the Leitner box gives you most of the benefit with none of the setup.
Fitting it into real study time
Spaced repetition changes the shape of a study session. Instead of always pushing forward into new material, you begin each session by clearing the reviews that are due, then spend the rest of your time learning something new (which becomes tomorrow’s review). Early in a course the review pile is tiny; it grows for a while, then shrinks as older material becomes solid and its intervals stretch out to weeks.
The practical key is to start early. Spaced repetition’s whole advantage is time, so it rewards the student who begins reviewing in week one and quietly punishes the one who discovers it the week before the exam. Building those short daily reviews into a study schedule you will actually follow is what turns the technique from a nice idea into results.
Common mistakes
- Turning reviews into rereading. If you “review” by looking over your notes, you have lost the benefit. A review is a recall attempt with the material hidden, checked afterwards.
- Reviewing everything every day. That is just repeated cramming and it does not scale. The point is that well-known material should be reviewed less often, freeing your time.
- Making the intervals too short out of anxiety. It feels safer to review daily, but a little forgetting between reviews is what makes the next one effective. Trust the gaps.
- Starting too late. Spaced repetition needs runway. Two days before an exam, there is no space left to space — at that point you are cramming, and that is a different game with worse odds.
The bottom line
Spaced repetition asks you to do something that feels slightly wrong: study a topic, then walk away from it before you have “finished,” and come back when you have half-forgotten it. That mild forgetting, followed by effortful recall, is precisely what builds durable memory. Spread your reviews out, retrieve rather than reread, and start early — and you will remember more of what you study for far longer, without adding a single hour to your week.
